After The Crib: Natural Wooden Beds And Organic Mattresses

Did you know that furniture in your home that contains MDF (medium density fiberboard) likely contains Formaldehyde?  Formaldehyde resins are commonly used to bind MDF together and these emissions pose health risks at sufficient concentrations for months after they are manufactured.  In 2011, the National Toxicology Program, an interagency program of the Department of Health and Human Services classified formaldehyde as a known human carcinogen.  According to the California Air Resources Board, formaldehyde can contribute to the risk of getting cancer, and, like other carcinogens, has no level that is known to be risk free.  Therefore, ARB recommends that you reduce indoor formaldehyde concentrations as much as possible.

For those ready to take the big leap of moving your child out of their crib and into a bed, there are a number of beds that are eco-friendly and non-toxic.  These beds are made of all natural wood with no formaldehyde emissions or toxic finishes.

Twin or Full Beds

Furnature is a Boston area based company which manufactures its furniture in its own workshops in Massachusetts. Per their website, they received a custom sofa order from a woman whose immune system was compromised and after years of research, they made the first sofa using all chemical-free ingredients.  Furnature bed frames are made from solid North American hard ash wood from sustainable forests. Their frames are made as platform bed frames with slats which are close enough to provide support without having to use a box spring or slat box foundation.

Pacific Rim

Pacific Rim bedroom furniture is made in Eugene, Oregon from Western Maple, also known as Big Leaf Maple, which grows along the Pacific Coast from California to Alaska. There are a number of online retailers such as who offer Pacific Rim furniture and their website lists stores by state which carry their line of furniture. We checked out their beds in a local showroom and were impressed with the quality and various designs offered. We ordered the Silhouette bed for our son’s room!

Twin or Full Organic Mattresses

When it is time to transition into a bed, Naturepedic offers organic twin and full mattresses. They have two organic kid mattress options – one with a waterproof side and one without. If you choose the mattress without the waterproof side, it is probably a wise choice to purchase their waterproof organic protector pad. We have used their mattress pad for our crib and it is fantastic. We purchased their Organic Cotton Deluxe with the Waterproof Organic Protector Pad for our son’s bed.

Naturepedic mattresses are also hypoallergenic (no wool/latex), flame retardant without the use of harmful chemicals and offer a 20 year limited warranty. Check out Naturepedic mattresses today!

Twin or Full Organic Sheets

I have had a difficult time finding cute patterned sheets for children’s twin or full beds that are organic. What I have decided to do for our son’s bed is to purchase solid colored organic sheets and go with his desired theme on an organic quilt.

There are many solid organic sheets for purchase but Magnolia Organics offers the best prices from what I have researched. As you search for organic sheets, note that many of the sheet sets listed as “organic” actually contain a very small percentage of organic cotton when you read the detail. Pottery Barn Kids was a frequent result in my searches as they offer really cute patterns but their sheets are “woven with organic fibers” which in reality is only 5% organic cotton.
