Do your little ones love to dress up and wear jewelry? My niece does and in looking for safe kid’s jewelry for her, I was appalled to see just how bad the situation is with jewelry and toxic chemicals. Did you know that back in July of 2012, 16 jewelry retailers and suppliers were sued by the state of California for selling jewelry with more than 1,000 times the allowable lead while claiming their jewelry was lead-free (Natural News)? Lead exposure can cause cognitive impairment, behavioral changes, abdominal pain and loss of appetite in children. If exposed to a high enough concentration, lead poisoning can be fatal as in the case of a 4 year old Minnesota boy who died after ingesting a metal charm that contained high levels of lead.
Cadmium is another metal that has been found in high concentrations in children’s jewelry and even in bracelets specifically marketed for babies. Cadmium can also cause brain damage and is a known carcinogen!
How can you ensure that the jewelry you are buying for your child is safe and non-toxic?
There are safer options! I have found the following companies that offer kid’s jewelry that is free of these toxic chemicals:
I love HABA’s line of toys and was happy to see that they also offer necklaces and bracelets! HABA is a German company and their jewelry is made in China (as are Shains and Juniorbeads below). This may be a concern to some based on all of the recalls which have occurred over the last few years. However, HABA has a strong reputation for quality assurance and I believe that they do offer safer products! According to a HABA representative in January 2014, they are no longer manufacturing their children’s jewelry line but you can still find it on blueberryforest.com!
Shainsware is a recycled fashion accessories company started by a mom from LA. Their product “elements” such as numbers, letters, icons can be interchanged on a variety of accessories which are made of recycled materials. Their bracelets & cuffs are made from Thermoplastic Elastomer (a rubber) and their “elements” are made of recycled Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (or ABS – a hard plastic). Shainsware products are made in China but are certified lead-free.
The company Chewbeads has expanded their line of mom’s wear baby teething necklaces to include kid’s necklaces! Their products are made in China of 100% silicone and are free of BPA, phthalates, lead and cadmium. The necklaces are washable with soap and water and are dishwasher safe! Check Out Juniorbeads on Amazon.com!
Cherished Moments is a company that produces children’s jewelry here in the US. Their jewelry is made of 100% sterling silver and we’ve confirmed with their customer service team that all crystal is made from Swarovski and is lead-free. I have ordered products from their website as gifts for my niece and have been very pleased with their quality. Check out Cherished Moments kid’s jewelry on cherishedmomentsshop.com!
