Natural Pregnancy Skin Care

Face Masks –

Many spas use organic skin care lines and although they contain organic ingredients, they often contain alpha hydroxy acids in their fruit based masques.  It is important to be aware of the following information in order to make informed decision as to whether or not you wish to receive treatments with these products.  Further reading from WebMD indicates:

Alpha hydroxy acids are a group of natural acids found in foods. Alpha hydroxy acids include citric acid (found in citrus fruits), glycolic acid (found in sugar cane), lactic acid (found in sour milk), malic acid (found in apples), tartaric acid (found in grapes), and others.

Various alpha hydroxy acids are applied to the skin (used topically) for moisturizing and removing dead skin cells, for treating acne and improving the appearance of acne scars, for improving the appearance of photo-aged skin, and firming and smoothing skin.

Alpha hydroxy creams at a concentration of 10% or less are LIKELY SAFE when applied to the skin during pregnancy and breast-feeding. But don’t take malic acid (the form of alpha hydroxy acids that is generally taken by mouth). Not enough is known about the safety of malic acid during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Acne Treatments

Although benzoyl peroxide has been considered safe to use during pregnancy, no data exists to examine its effect on unborn children.  The American Pregnancy Association advises pregnant women to avoid salicylic acid as well as Accutane, Retin-A and Tetracycline.

Perfumes

I avoided perfumes while pregnant and continue to wear very sparingly (i.e. a night out) even now. I found this great article on 6 natural perfumes that do not contain phthalates or parabens from ecosalon. The brands are Strange Invisible Perfumes, Honores Des Pres, Persephenie, Crow Perfume, Red Flower and Le Labo.
